Program Outline:

Session 1: Whakawhanaungatanga and Confidence Building

Date: 18th February 2025
Location: The Hub, Whakatipu Youth Trust/ Base Camp, Red Oaks Drive

  • Kai and whakawhanaungatanga to foster trust and belonging.
  • Climbing activities focused on building resilience, mindfulness, and problem-solving skills.

Session 2: Waka Ama and Kotahitanga

Date: 22nd February 2025
Location: Local waterways

  • A coached waka ama session exploring kotahitanga (unity), teamwork, and the importance of collective effort.

Session 3: Taiao Immersion

Date: 28th February – 1st March 2025
Location: Te Koawa Lodge, Fiordland

  • A two-night stay centred on connecting with the taiao, including:
    • Adventure-therapy practices that link nature immersion to mental and emotional resilience, supported by our qualified and registered counsellor, Sam.
    • Exploring Māori pūrākau about nature’s role in well-being.
    • Getting rangatahi out into the taiao through activities such as hiking, mountain biking, a boat ride on Lake Manapouri, indoor climbing, geocaching and games (all weather depending).
    • Getting involved in Te Waiau Mahika Kai Conservation Project highlighting kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and the global importance of environmental care.
    • Preparing meals together to foster whanaungatanga.
